The Phoenix weekend has come and gone and I have to believe it will be a while before I forget all the action we shared together. For those of you that had to miss the party, you missed a good one. I counted over 20 JNFL members on hand for the action. Heck, we had a couple drive all the way from Rhode Island just to pop in and say hi. For starters, Saturday was easily the best spring day we have seen yet. June and I had a blast working around the house, playing in the garden and running back and forth to Home Depot. With about two hours to go before the race started, the phone started to ring. Now that we are in the season pretty far it seems that everyone knows how to make a pick on the website so everything went really smooth. A few people failed to call that always do, most notably Steve and Spencer Jones, Charlie and Canute. The last two fellows called in on Sunday to apologize, the were in the mountains fishing for trout and completely forgot. Canute is on the internet now and was able to shoot me an apology over the internet too. Here is what he said: "sorry fishing 'cellphone don't work in mountains.thanks for headsup callto wife. thank god for backup drivers. anyhoo scaner took a dump on me can't send ya picture of granddaughter see ya soon toshow her picture too youzxzzzzs.
the canutenater."
I always get a kick out of Sunday calls following Saturday night races. Invariably someone always misses the race and every once in a while they call to make their pick on Sunday with absolutely no clue the race had been run the night before. Don't laugh, it will be you this upcoming off weekend calling me to ask, "Hey, where are we racing this weekend? I can't find them on the TV."
So the final call was in and suddenly the broadcast went to the Yankees vs. Red Sox baseball game. Right away the phone lights up. "Whats' happening?" I had to get the official start of the race from my Sirius radio - that is a first.
With the new website design I was quickly able to print the picks and head to the bar. Upon arrival it was clear that we were the last people there and we were a couple drinks behind some people. Now I must say that while we were working around the house I put down a few Molson Canadians. June and I bought into the pool that was running - I drew Martin Tuex Jr. It couldn't have been much longer after that when our pick of Ryan Newman burst an oil line and emptied his entire supply onto the track which in turn wrecked everybody behind him as they spun out in the fluid. Needless to say the night was over for my pick as he finished dead last. Nice.
The JNFL Press were in attendance and interviews were being conducted with various members. Pictures were taken and hands were shaken. Old frienships were reaquainted and new members were introduced to the masses. A bounty of food was put out for everyone to enjoy for free. I heard one member went over and above to bring a bunch of it . Seemed like a short race but that didn't stop us from closing the place. Upon leaving we gathered up a couple friends and finished out the evening at home over a couple bottles of wine. One really fantastic evening - only wish we would have picked Jimmie Johnson.
If you can, make some plans now to be at the next Saturday night race. Richmond is always a good time.
